The Penpal Project

Princess Alice Hospice, Hinchley Wood School & Emberbrook Care Home
2017

In 2017, we partnered with Emberbrook Care Home, Princess Alice Hospice, and Hinchley Wood School to test the demand for our intergenerational letter-writing workshops. Led by artists Yero Timi-Biu and Vanessa Kisuule, participants from all three settings engaged in weekly creative workshops and exchanged letters with their pen pals.

“It’s a basic human need to want to be useful...this project gave me a chance to help someone else. Just because I am near the end of my life, it does not mean I can't be helpful to others.”

The project aimed to foster connections between generations, challenging assumptions and building new friendships. Many of the young students, who passed the care home daily, were surprised to learn more about its residents, while hospice patients found a meaningful outlet in sharing life experiences that could help the next generation.

The project proved the power of letters to bridge generational gaps, and its success was evident in the lasting connections formed.
