INYBB Environmental Policy & Action Plan 2025-27

Protecting the environment is vital for the conservation of natural resources and the continued health of our planet, particularly at a time when the world is in a triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. INYBB recognises its responsibility to protect the environment and is continually working to reduce the environmental impact of the work we do.

This Environmental Policy is a working document and will be reviewed annually.

Key Aims
Administration and Management
  • Comply with all relevant environmental regulations and legislations
  • Reduce our carbon footprint
  • Reduce the use of non-renewable energy resources
  • Reduce waste produced across the organisation
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle goods wherever possible in all aspects of the business
  • Use local suppliers and resources
  • Raise staff and building user awareness through training, signage and facilities

Staff and Stakeholder Engagement
  • We will increase accountability by appointing a team of staff to lead on environmental issues and the resources to have a clear focus in this area (by 31 Dec 2025)
  • Advocate for artists to consider the environmental impact of their work
  • Reduce the environmental impact of travel by staff and artists
  • Advocate for participants to consider the impact of their travel to our events and provide advice and incentives to support this

Project Management and Programmes
  • Ensure the projects and events we produce are as environmentally friendly as possible
  • Raise awareness and promote discussion on environmental issues through our work

Fundraising and Campaigns
  • We practice ethical fundraising and share knowledge with the sector in relation to sustainability, transparency and minimal environmental impact in all fundraising activities.

Environmental Action Plan
Our environmental action plan is divided into four main areas:

1. Our Office Energy Consumption (rented space from Pro Nursing)

  • We monitor and regulate individual room temperatures within our control, switch off heating in rooms which are not in use
  • We have double glazed efficient glass throughout the office building
  • We switch off lights in rooms not in use and use natural light where possible
  • We use low energy bulbs wherever possible and replace spent bulbs with energy efficient alternatives
  • We encourage all office users to only use cooling equipment (fans and air conditioning) when necessary and only if natural ventilation is not sufficient
  • We ensure that all office users turn off electrical equipment (including computers) when not in use and switch off at the plug where appropriate
  • We only run dishwashers when full
  • We use reusable crockery (not disposable) wherever possible
  • We talk face-to-face or use instant messaging systems with colleagues rather than emailing
  • We recycle papers, cans, glass, cardboard, plastics, batteries and pens through provision of recycling bins in offices and common spaces
  • We recycle light bulbs, printer and photocopier cartridges, mobile phones and IT hardware through third party providers wherever possible
  • We use recycled paper wherever possible
  • We only print when necessary and use double-sided print or scrap paper wherever possible for printing or note taking
  • We buy second hand goods wherever possible

2. Our Staff Training and Awareness
Our environmental policy and action plan is included in our Staff Handbook. We use trains rather than cars where possible and support staff in finding best practice travel options. Cycle parking is available at our office, and we promote environmentally friendly transport options to our visitors.

3. External Support, Networks and Suppliers
We research suppliers and their environmental credentials. We use a local bank branch, the majority of banking is done online, and invoices are sent electronically. We are members of Fit for the Future, a knowledge-sharing network that supports organisations to monitor their environmental impact, support decarbonisation, adapt to climate change and drive positive environmental impacts by working together.

4. Our Creative Health and Artistic Programmes
We encourage the re-use and recycling of all art materials. We print minimum quantities of marketing materials and all printed materials on recycled paper and card. We ensure that any packaging used is recycled/recyclable/made of biodegradable materials where possible. We continually investigate alternatives to print (e.g. online products) and maximise digital alternatives where appropriate. We offer online options in preference to posted print materials.

Action for 2025 – to be implemented by 31 Dec 2025
  • Designate a lead staff member to lead on this policy and monitor our environmental impact
  • Develop a directory of environmentally aware suppliers
  • Move towards using more recycled art materials and non-plastic versions of paint

This policy will be reviewed on or before 1 August 2026.
