The Firs and Fenner House: Dear Friend 



2018-2019
In 2018, we collaborated with The Firs in Claygate and Fenner House in Walton-on-Thames, two independent living schemes for older adults. The project aimed to foster connections and combat loneliness among residents, encouraging friendships within and between the two communities. 





"I did not expect to make such a good new friend in my nineties!"

The project was led by poet Maureen Jivani and artist Sarah Bennett, who facilitated creative activities using prompts like favourite recipes, personal idols, and sources of laughter. Residents created visual art, crafts, and wrote letters, some of which led to pen pal exchanges between members of the two groups. 

The project culminated in a special event where participants met their pen pals for the first time. Feedback highlighted the joy and connection felt by the residents, with many enjoying the structured, fun, and memorable experience. This initiative nurtured new friendships and enriched the lives of older adults in both communities.
