Poems by Post
2017
In 2017, we partnered with The Royal Star & Garter Home in Surbiton on the Poems by Post project. This initiative aimed to explore the impact of sending creative prompts via post rather than electronically. Lead artist Tom Mallender worked with twelve residents to share personal stories and memories, which were used as inspiration for poetry. These poems were sent to poets from across the UK, from London to Newcastle, who crafted responses. 




"Taking part in this project has brought a special moment to the whole home. Everyone involved found themselves digging into wonderful stories that were somehow forgotten and sharing with the children from Hinchley Wood School created a real community and family-like atmosphere.”

Additionally, the residents were paired with pen pals from Hinchley Wood School, guided by artist Rachel Turner. Through exchanging letters, they compared their experiences of school, work, and family. The project culminated in a published anthology of over 35 poems and a tea party where the pen pals met in person. The project fostered deep connections between generations and highlighted the power of handwritten letters.
