Nothing About Us Without Us

Sep 2020 - Sep 2022
In 2022, the Nothing About Us Without Us project brought together 20 participants from the community, particularly those living alone and affected by pandemic disruptions. Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, The Community Foundation for Surrey, and Elmbridge Museum, the initiative aimed to amplify voices often overlooked.

Participants had their portraits painted, which they kept, alongside recorded interviews sharing their stories and perspectives. These narratives challenged the labels of “socially isolated” or “clinically extremely vulnerable” by giving individuals the chance to tell their own stories.

The project, in partnership with Elmbridge Museum, culminated in a free exhibition in Esher (April–Sept 2022) and an online showcase, preserving these stories in museum archives for future generations.

Partner organizations, including Claygate Centre, Milaap Centre, PA Housing, and others, helped identify participants, who reported feeling less isolated, more connected, and valued by their community.
