Transforming Spaces Through Art
2022–2024
Creative Connections was a collaborative project uniting INYBB, Kingston Hospital, and Anstee Bridge, an alternative education programme for 11-16-year-olds. Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, Achieving for Children, and Kingston Hospital Charity, the project delivered two projects, one in 2023 for the Mental Health Assessment Unit (MHAU) at Kingston Hospital and one in 2024 for the Paediatric Accident and Emergency Department. As part of this project we also delivered two creative wellbeing projects for the staff, which were well received and produced some beautiful printed and ceramic artworks.
For the MHAU artworks, our team of artists worked alongside than 60 Anstee Bridge students in creating art to transform the hospital's stark, clinical space into a calming, patient-centered environment. The project provided young people with a unique opportunity to develop artistic, teamwork, communication, and social skills while making a meaningful contribution to their community. The completed artwork will remain on display for at least three years, benefiting patients, families, and staff by fostering a more relaxing and inspiring atmosphere.
In the paediatric A&E we were asked to focus on artwork that would appeal to children 8+. The Anstee Bridge students did a brilliant job of coming up with a variety of nature themed ideas and the INYBB artistic team developed them into a series of joyful murals. We were delighted that four of the doctors and nurses helped us get the ideas on the walls. As well as the main murals, we also painted mini butterflies, caterpillars and fish around the cubicles so they could act as a distraction focus to aid staff administering medicines, blood tests and other procedures children may not enjoy. This has proved a practical and effective way of art making a difference in an environment which may be frightening. We hope to return to the Hospital soon, subject to funding, to ensure the art is in all the cubicles at Kingston Hospital Paediatric A&E.
