Art in Clinical Spaces



Murals in Kingston Hospital paediatric A&E,
2025 - date
We worked alongside students at a local alternative education provision to design some murals for the Paediatric Accident and Emergency Department in Kingston Hospital. Rather than looking at blank walls, the young patients and families can now enjoy scenes of space, skies, the ocean and nature.

Healthcare is about more than treatment. The environments in which care takes place can have a measurable impact on how people feel, cope and recover. A growing body of evidence shows that thoughtfully designed creative environments can reduce anxiety, improve wellbeing and support more positive healthcare experiences for both patients and staff.




Designed by local young people, for young people in our community, these murals transform once-sterile cubicles into warmer, more welcoming spaces. They help to reduce anxiety and offer a creative distraction from pain, treatment and examinations. When a space feels cared for, the people in it can feel cared for too.

Staff have reported on the positive impact of the murals firsthand, reporting that they help create a calmer environment and influence how patients feel while they are there. Staff have also shared that the murals have helped them to do neurological assessments by using features and colours of the murals, a great practical outcome of art as clinical aid. 


Whilst installing the artworks, ten clinical staff were able to help paint and told us of the marked impact on their stress levels and improvement to their wellebing in a high pressured environment. As a result, we will be at the Hospital Staff Wellbeing Day to support wellbeing through creativity. 

Thanks to all the staff at Kingston Hospital Paediatric A&E who helped us to facilitate this project, whilst also running a busy department. Thank you to the Kingston Hospital Charity and to the students of Anstee Bridge for their brilliant ideas. Thank you also to our volunteers on the project who helped install the murals in the bays.
